2011 & 2012 Rally Recap

Rand McNally kicked off the inaugural search for the Best Small Towns in America in the summer of 2011, when five teams of two drove from New York to LA to visit six towns each in two weeks. Towns were nominated in five categories—Most Beautiful, Most Patriotic, Friendliest, Most Fun, and Best for Food—with votes tallied from online reviews. The teams recorded their journeys with photos, videos, blogs capturing the distinct spirit of each community that took them in for a few days.

In 2012, the Travel Channel came along for the ride, which kicked off in Washington, D.C. and concluded in Seattle, WA. In our second round of small town contenders, four 2011 finalists returned to the competition, and 15 towns were featured on our debut Travel ChannelTV special.

In two years of small town adventures all over America, we’ve discovered proud, united, tight-knit communities; standout local cuisines; unforgettable scenery; and so much fun. View, watch, and read some of our favorite memories along the way:
