Mention California's Napa Valley today, and you'll conjure up visions of vineyards stretching between forested mountains and wineries beckoning around every bend of Highway 29. It was the valley's hot mineral springs and geysers that caught newspaper magnate Sam Brannan's entrepreneurial eye, however. In the mid-19th century, he built a fancy health spa to take advantage of the springs, which the local Wappo Indians had long revered for their restorative powers. Legend has it that Brannan coined the name of the town when he announced at the opening of this facility, which he planned to tout as the "Saratoga of California," that his resort was going to be the "Calistoga of Sarafornia". To this day, thousands of wine-tasting-weary travelers stop at one of the more than a dozen spas in Calistoga and neighboring St. Helena to unwind and rejuvenate with a mud bath, massage, or mineral wrap. So, come here to drink in the scenery and the local wines, but take time to check out local attractions and shops, hike in the hills, or soar over the valley in a glider or hot-air balloon. Then sink into a soothing tub of warm mud made of volcanic ash, peat, and mineral water. There's nothing like it!
