State Detail - Saskatchewan

The wide-open expanses of Saskatchewan can be crazily exhilarating or quite tedious depending on your affinity for rolling prairie. Prairie forms fully a third of the land here, with wheat fields dominating much of the landscape. Lakes, forests, and pure wilderness make up the remaining terrain, with only a handful of sizeable cities providing much hustle. The gentle calm of this land and a seeming slow-down of time make Saskatchewan prime for outdoor adventure, with amazing possibilities for fishing, canoeing, hiking, camping, and biking.

Saskatchewan has parks: two national, 22 provincial, 13 historic, and more than 100 regional parks all over the province, offering a full spectrum for outdoor recreation. Saskatchewan is also regarded throughout the world as a great destination for sport and recreational fishing. You can visit fishing camps and remote fishing lodges, or choose from about 100,000 northern lakes -- virtually inexhaustible possibilities for R&R up here.

Saskatoon is the province's largest city, a university town with lots to do and a wide variety of ethnic restaurants. Regina, the capital city, has parks, museums, art galleries, theaters, and great shopping opportunities. In Moose Jaw you can peer into the seedier side of the province's history by touring bootlegging facilities and remnants of getaway tunnels used by smugglers during U.S. Prohibition.

Other trip ideas here include scenic drives -- any given half-hour's drive will take you to some kind of off-the-beaten-path treasure -- and farm vacations, where you can really get to the essence of the Canadian West. Saskatchewan rewards patience, and can deliver some real peace of mind.
